FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to participate in the student adjudications?

Anyone age 5 and above is welcome and encouraged to participate in the Keyboard Festival!

I'm not sure what my level is- how do I decide?

It is up to the participant and their teacher to decide which level they feel fits best.

As a guideline:

Beginner - students that are elementary school aged OR have been studying for approximately 2 years or less

Intermediate - students that are middle school/high school aged OR have been studying for approximately 3-5 years

Advanced - students that are high school/college/adult aged OR have been studying for more than 6 years

When is the timeframe to register?

The registration period is from April 18th - May 21st, 2022.

Is there a registration fee?

The registration fee for student adjudication is $26.00.

Keyboard Festival Week 2022 (June 13-17, 2022) events will be free and open to the (virtual) public.

I've never made a video of my playing before. Do I need a professional video?

Part of this educational experience is creating the video - even for the first time - possibly with the video camera on your phone another device! Please see our Recording Guidelines to help in recording your video. Try several takes to see for yourself what works and what doesn't.

Can I edit my video before I submit it?

It depends on what you mean by editing. You are encouraged to crop the beginning and end of your video to eliminate any excess, non-musical content (aside from your optional student introduction), but the musical content of your video - starting from the optional spoken introduction must be done in one take. No editing of the musical content will be permitted and will result in disqualification from participation in Keyboard Festival 2022.

How do I acquire copyright permission before participating in Keyboard Festival 2022?

For Keyboard Festival 2022, Hal Leonard and Kjos have both granted permission for student use of their copyrighted works. Alfred Publishing requires that each student contact them directly at permissions@alfred.com.

Sample email message to Alfred Publishing:

"My name is <NAME> and I would like to play an Alfred piece in the upcoming virtual student adjudication as part of Keyboard Festival 2022 hosted by the New Jersey Chapter of the World Piano Teachers Association.

The name of my piece is <TITLE> and it's in <BOOK>. I already own a copy of this book. I would like Alfred's permission to record this piece for use in the student adjudication and to make a PDF of the score for the adjudicators.

Thank you for your help and support of Keyboard Festival 2022.
